New Year’s Day 2026 and 2027
Taiwan celebrates New Year’s Day with a public holiday every 1 January, as does most of the rest of the world. However, the celebrations really begin on New Year’s Eve and reach a high point with the turning of the clock from 11:59pm on 31 December to midnight on 1 January.

In Taiwan, the period between Christmas and New Year’s Day is very patriotic as well as very festive. This is because of the fact that 1 January also Republic Day, while 25 December is also Constitution Day. Additionally, Chinese Lunar New Year is celebrated for up to two weeks beginning sometime in February.
The real major celebration is actually Chinese New Year, but 1 January is also observed. People generally get the day off work, and they may get a few days off and then have to work a “make up day” later.
Fireworks, family gatherings and dinners, greeting people with a loud “Happy New Year!” at midnight, and staying up all night New Year’s Eve and into the early morning hours of New Year’s Day are all common in Taiwan. For some, it is little more than a day to relax, but for others, it is a “real” holiday.
